If you have a ventilation system in your building, it is highly likely you have fire & smoke dampers. Fire & smoke dampers are a critical part of the fire strategy systems and in the event of a fire can save lives
The Law Around Fire Dampers
As such they must comply with several regulations by law, this includes a yearly inspection and maintenance as per the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005.
Many companies are offering this service without adequately trained staff. We at The Fire Damper Company are fully trained under the Construction Industry Training Board and The National Association of Air Duct Specialist UK (Naaduk) and hold Safe Contractor Status enabling us to install, test, replace, record and register your fire or smoke dampers.
What Are Fire & Smoke Dampers
Fire dampers are passive fire protection products used in heating, ventilation and air conditioning ducts to avoid the spread of fire inside the ductwork and prevent fire from spreading to the adjacent compartments. When a rise in temperature occurs, the fire damper closes, usually activated by a thermal element which melts at temperature higher than ambient but low enough to indicate the presence of a fire, allowing the springs to close the damper blades preventing process of fire. Smoke dampers operate mechanically, activated either directly by the smoke alarm or by an internal smoke sensor element, in some cases these dampers may shut or stay open to help the system will extract smoke and eventually close once the fire actives the heat sensor.
What Do The Fire Damper Co. Do?
Unfortunately for many years fire dampers have not been installed correctly, all manufacturers issue installation manuals which haven’t been adhered to by building contractors and mechanical & electrical companies. This is mainly due to lack of knowledge & understanding. We will survey, inspect, test, clean and Issue photos & construct a report. This will create a damper history and timeline which should be kept with your building records for future maintenance, handovers or insurance purposes. We would highlight any failures, allowing you to negotiate with your landlord or contractor to request any issues be rectified. We can offer quotes for such remedial works. All fire damper blades are manually drop tested and reset to confirm integrity.
